  • PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
    Summer Experience in Agricultural Research The work experience for Agricultural Research students will include learning research techniques and processes in a variety of areas including nutrient management, dairy cattle nutrition, agronomy, reproductive physiology of dairy cattle and horses, and dairy cattle behavior. Forage quality assessment procedures will be taught in Miner Institute’s Forage Laboratory. Students may also gain work experience in the dairy research facility: feeding cows for individual feed intakes, measuring in situ digestibilities in ruminally cannulated cows, milk sampling, urine/fecal sampling, blood sampling, and assessing dairy cattle behavior. Learn more here: Summer Experiences | Miner Institute (whminer.org) Summer Experience in Equine Management The emphasis of this program is the management of a commercial equine facility and improved horse handling and training skills. Students will learn ground training techniques including halter breaking, lungeing, longlining, and ground driving. The versatility of the Morgan and varied ages and abilities of horses at Miner Institute allow for students to experience many different disciplines to varying degrees: saddleseat, huntseat, dressage, western pleasure and driving. Students become proficient at stallion handling, semen collection, and processing as well as broodmare management. Learn more here: Summer Experiences | Miner Institute (whminer.org) Summer Experience in Farm Management Work Experience for Farm Management students includes milking, herd health, calves, and a variety of field work activities such as tillage, planting, and harvest. The students fit and show a string of dairy cattle at the local county fair. The Summer Experience in Farm Management introduces students to the modern farm as a business, which has as its objective the conversion of plants into milk and meat. Learn more here: Summer Experiences | Miner Institute (whminer.org) Water Quality Research Students will learn about all phases of Miner Institute's nutrient management research program which aims to identify agricultural best management practices that enhance soil and water quality while maintaining farm profitability. Students will gain experience in all aspects of the research process including soil and water sample collection, field data acquisition, field equipment maintenance/programming, laboratory instrumentation/analytical methods, as well as basic data management and application. Students will participate in a variety of research trials as well as conduct their own independent research project. Miner Museum and Miner Institute to organize and promote community events and/or projects that help to preserve history relevant to the Miners and/or help to plan and organize new exhibits for The Heart's Delight Farm Heritage Exhibit or The Alice T. Miner Museum. Interns will be given some latitude in choosing projects to work on based on their personal interests and what is happening at Miner Institute and The Alice T. Miner Museum.   • RESEARCH TECHNICIAN
    The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute is a private, not-for-profit organization with educational, research, and demonstration facilities located in Chazy, New York. Miner Institute’s research emphasis is chiefly dairy nutrition and forage quality, which are pertinent to the local economy. Ability to work with dairy cattle must be demonstrated. Computer and math skills are necessary. In addition, experience operating various pieces of farm equipment from skidsteers to tractors is preferred. Miner Institute is an equal opportunity employer. Salary/Benefits Full-time position with great benefits including health insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, employer-funded retirement plan and more. Pay range: $18-$20/hour. Duties Feeding of dairy cattle using mobile small feed mixers and updating feeding modules on a regular basis Feed sample collection and preparation for analysis Sample collection: milk, rumen, fecal, urine, behavior, etc. Data entry and summarization using software programs such as Microsoft Excel Care of dairy cattle including but not limited to: manure scraping, water bowl cleaning, and animal grooming Project planning and preparation Additional duties as assigned by the Research Scientists or Director of Research Qualifications Must have experience working with dairy cattle Must be capable of safely operating farm equipment: skid steer and tractor experience is preferred. Must have ability to solve basic math problems Must have computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Outlook, OneNote, Excel and Word. Must have ability and willingness to adhere to stringent research protocols Must have good communication skills and interact cooperatively with coworkers, students and visitors. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities of a research institute Ability to multi-task while being detail oriented Associates degree or bachelor’s degree is preferred with a preference for degrees in dairy or animal science Must have the ability and willingness to work independently and to work a partial weekend shift with Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday off.
  • INTERNSHIP IN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH
    A one-year internship work experience is offered in Agricultural Research to graduates of 4-year degree programs interested in exploring career opportunities in agricultural research. Research skills will be developed in a variety of areas but will be focused mainly on dairy cattle nutrition, calf/heifer nutrition, dairy cattle behavior, and agronomy. Students will gain work experience in the dairy research facility: feeding cows/heifers/calves for individual feed intakes, milk sampling, urine/fecal sampling, blood sampling, caring for ruminally cannulated cows and assessing dairy cattle behavior. Agronomic and nutrient management research techniques for evaluating crop performance, ensiling practices and optimizing nutrient integration and retention in soils may also be learned. Leadership skills will be developed once proficiency in various skill sets has been demonstrated. The intern will be provided with opportunities to serve as a mentor for Advanced Dairy Management and Summer Experience in Agricultural Research students. In addition to the work experience, opportunities will be made available for the agricultural research intern to develop or expand a sound foundation in a specific area of interest by attending lectures and workshops offered at Miner Institute and scientific meetings. The intern will be asked to work long hours on occasion, but no more so than would normally be expected in an agricultural research facility as a graduate student or technician. This is a paid internship position and includes housing and meals when the Miner Institute cafeteria is open. Additional benefits are also offered.
